When you found the correct yarn in  sts/ weight,  check yardage : easy formula for figuring out yardage of an alternate yarn: 
         pattern requests ____ balls @ ____yds ( or meters)  = balls __ x ___ yardage (or meters) = _____total of  yardage( or meters). 
Total of yardage( or meters)   _____divided by your choice of yarn _____yardage( or meters). = ______number of balls you need to buy of your yarn choice.
Take always either yardage  or meters  to figure out the correct amount of yarn.
